"This is water" Reflection Entry:                                                                                    by:  Dyeato Paye

I enjoyed the brutal honesty that David Foster Wallace displayed in his tone throughout his speech in the video "This is Water". I also liked how he described how as humans we have this set default in our brains anytime that something doesn't go our way to be upset and think that the world is out to get us. It was extremely relatable at the parts of the video when David Foster Wallace elaborated on how going to college prepares you for the typical adult life of working nonstop and never having time to rest because we only have so much time as humans to finish our obligations of one day and to continue completing more tedious tasks for the following days.

What struck out as clever to me was the visuals made in the video by CD Mosley such as the goldfish one that matched perfectly with the tone of Mr. Wallace's speech. The combination of Mr. Wallace's approach in how he spoke in the video and the visuals made by the CD Mosley both were very intriguing and made me think and evaluate parts of my life as a college student. Images and the audio together provoked me in a positive way like when David Foster Wallace spoke with the visuals on the mother in a checkout line with her crying son as an example for how we as humans overly think of ourselves and not think of the needs of others and what they could possibly be going through. This part of the video affected me because it made me realize how often I do this without thinking about the needs of other people and sympathizing with them. It helped remind me on how I try putting myself in the shoes of other people.

Overall, the whole image and outlook of the video "This is Water" and the voice of David Foster Wallace and his speech resonated with me as a college student because it helped me rediscover that I should stay open-minded no matter how many obstacles come my way, and that as I take on the journey of college, I should work hard and never give up.
